Description

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College-New York Presbyterian Hospital offers a one-year ACGME approved program that includes training in diagnostic gynecological and non-gynecological exfoliative cytopathology, fine-needle aspiration biopsy, specimen preparation, and laboratory management. The Papanicolaou Cytopathology Laboratory had over 53,000 specimens accessioned last year, of which approximately 12,045 were non-gynecological specimens and of those, over 4,000 were fine-needle aspirations, offering a broad range of specimens from which the trainee may learn. Training in fine needle aspirations includes participation in the performance and on-site interpretation of needle aspirations of palpable masses and in the on-site interpretation of specimens obtained under radiologic guidance; including transabdominal and endoscopic-ultrasound and CT-guided transthoracic. The fellow will be expected to complete one project in cytopathology for presentation at the ASC or USCAP. Graduating fellows are fully prepared for a career in either an academic or private setting.

The four cytopathologists on the Cytology Service have extensive experience in both exfoliative and aspiration cytopathology. They have trained and worked at renowned institutions including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Montefiore Medical Center, New York University Medical Center and Oregon Health and Science University.

New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Center is located in a beautiful residential neighborhood along the East River in Manhattan within walking distance of Central Park. The midtown entertainment and shopping areas, major museums, concert halls and opera house are close by.

Requirements: Candidates must have completed a four-year AP/CP residency or three years of a straight AP residency.

Number of Appointments: One position is available for academic year 2015-2016.

Facilities: New York Presbyterian Hospital is the major clinical affiliate and teaching hospital of Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Its New York Weill Cornell Center, an 824-bed facility, is centrally located in a highly sophisticated medical community surrounded by the Hospital for Special Surgery, the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Rockefeller University.

Stipends: Salaries are commensurate with the level of training.
