Breast Pathology Fellowship

OVERVIEW:

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of Weill Cornell Medical Center (WMC) offers a one year Breast Pathology Fellowship under the direction of Dr. Sandra J. Shin. The fellowship training focuses on the characterization of mammary neoplasms and non-neoplastic diseases of the breast. It emphasizes a multidisciplinary team approach to patient management as well as clinicopathologic and translational research. A wealth of interesting and challenging cases through the long-standing breast pathology consultation service founded by Dr. Paul Peter Rosen is available for study. This breast pathology consultation service processes more than 2500 nationally and internationally-submitted cases each year. Due to the large volume, the breast pathology consultation service is a free-standing clinical service with a dedicated breast pathologist on duty each day. In addition, the fellow will participate in the in-house breast pathology service which provides additional exposure to the more commonly seen malignant and benign mammary diseases. The in-house breast pathology service processes over 2800 breast specimens annually. The collective abundance of breast pathology material both in volume and diversity is a unique feature of this breast pathology fellowship. In addition to a complete diagnostic experience, the fellow is poised to start and complete a translational research project during his/her training. A departmentally-funded Translational Research Core Facility offers a wide array of research services including histology, immunohistochemistry, tissue array, cytogenetics and molecular techniques, thus providing the opportunity to conduct clinically relevant and scientifically sophisticated studies. This endeavor will be done under the supervision of an attending breast pathologist, however, collaborative extradepartmental research opportunities are also possible.

Requirements: Candidates must have completed a four-year AP/CP residency or three years of a straight AP residency.

Number of Appointments: One position is available each year starting with academic year 2015-2016.

Facilities: New York-Presbyterian Hospital is the major clinical affiliate and teaching hospital of Weill Cornell Medical College. Its New York-Weill Cornell Center, an 824-bed facility, is centrally located in a highly sophisticated medical community surrounded by the Hospital for Special Surgery, the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Rockefeller University.

Community: The Medical Center is located in a beautiful residential neighborhood along the East River in Manhattan within walking distance of Central Park and the midtown entertainment and shopping areas. Attractions include major museums, concert halls, theaters, and an opera house, all of which are in close proximity.

Stipends: Salaries are commensurate with the level of training.
